Happy birthday to artist Thomas Moran born #OTD 1837. In accompanying 1872 Hayden Expedition & 1873 Powell Expedition, his artwork shaped public opinion about western lands. Two paintings (Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone & Chasm of the Colorado) are in @InteriorMuseum collection.

#OTD 1959, Hawai'i becomes 50th US state, but @Interior's connection dates to 1898 US annexation of Hawaiian Islands, when responsibility for relations was assigned to Interior. Most Hawaiian artifacts in @InteriorMuseum's collection, like this pandanus fan, are from 1930-50s.

🌸Continuing w/ #PollinatorWeek, here are 2 examples of floral designs on Chippewa basketry. One is made w/ seed beads stitched onto the bark lid of a c1945 sewing basket (INTR 00714). The other is done in quillwork on the birch bark panel of a 1930s wastebasket (INTR 00342).🌼
#OTD 1871, John Wesley Powell's expedition embarks on a second voyage down the Colorado River, following on his famous 1869 survey. Our #ObjectoftheMonth is this 1936 painting by William Henry Jackson showing a camp scene in Marble Canyon from the 1871 expedition (INTR 03003).

This circa 1925 vessel is by Nampeyo of Hano (c. 1859-1942), perhaps the first Native American potter nationally recognized by name. She frequently decorated her pottery with an abstract bird wing design known as the migration pattern. (INTR 01368) #WomeninCulture #MuseumWeek
