Today is officially National but these two 1938 murals by Ernest Fiene in our Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Building remind us *every* day of their importance in protecting life, property, and natural and cultural resources.

In terms of artwork, our famous 1872 Thomas Moran painting, “The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” (INTR 03001) is among our largest, measuring 7 feet tall by 12 feet wide. (/end)

1871, however, Moran finds Tower Fall to be even more bizarre in person, later describing it as “certainly the most weird & impressive scene.” What makes it so unusual? Eroded volcanic pinnacles frame the 132'-drop of Tower Creek. (2/4)

Hayden Survey gears up at Ft Ellis 1871. This US Army installation was active 1867-1886. Located near Bozeman, MT, the fort was a logical base of operations for those headed into the Yellowstone region.
