“He said the black lead mine belonged chiefly to a Mr. Banks (Henry)”

Henry Bankes (1757–1834), an English politician, inherited the black lead mine. The family seat of the Bankes family was Corfe Castle, then Kingston Lacy in Dorset since 1665.

Anne mispelled his last name.

There are 2 theories on how the Bowder Stone of Borrowdale came to be where it is:
1. The rock was carried down the valley by a glacier many thousands of years ago, or 2. It fell down in a gigantic rockfall from Bowder Crag, 200m above the stone 10,000 years ago (more likely). 🪨

“the beautiful waterfall at Lowdore is about 100 yards from the Inn – very little water in now, but still beautiful – the chasm and the surrounding rocks beautifully wooded – 20 minutes seeing the fall”

Lodore is Anne's 5th waterfall !
It runs down 100ft ~ 30m in steep cascades.

“all the valuable privileges he granted the town, were now made the most of by the steward for Greenwich hospital – the property worth £100,000 a year”

From 1735 to 1865 the Crown granted the income from Derwentwater estates to completion of the Greenwich Hospital in London.

Thank you Ann for visiting Canterbury on June 13th 1834 and writing out all bits and bobs about the Cathedral! I loved it! This warms my 💓 "The shops appear very good particularly for muslins in which trade and silk. Besides celebrated brawn the town excels."

Anne shows no interest in the Lake Poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) and Robert Southey (1774-1843).
Southey, Poet laureate, lived at Greta Hall, Keswick from 1804 with his & Coleridge's family since Coleridge abandoned them. Author of Goldilocks and the Three Bears etc.

"a division of the 6th dragoons (Enniskillen) came into Kendal this morning – a party of the officers came off here for the day, and dined in the next room to us"

Founded in Nor. Ireland the 6th Dragoons were in 1824 based in Scotland under the command of General George Herbert.
