Beep beep. it's the birthday of the American still life painter Raphael Peale (1774-1825). I came across him when I was making my American art series, Big Skies etc, but couldn't fit him in. Peale was especially good at oranges and lemons. So they called him 'Citrus' Peale.

Oooooh! On Feb 20, the British Museum is putting a selection of its superb collection of Post-Impressionist prints on show. I'll be first in the queue! They have marvellous things by Manet, Cezanne, Gauguin.

I didn't know Kirk Douglas - obviously. But I did go round Palm Springs Museum once, listening to his commentary on the audio guide. I particularly remember his comments on Kandinsky. 'Kandinsky', said Spartacus, 'took the subject matter out of art'. Happy days.

To celebrate this new age of ours, today is the birthday of Japan art star, Takashi Murakami. If you're looking for intelligence, maturity, grace, insight or sentience in his work - forget it. There isn't any. But the picture, top right, sold for $4,4. million. Hello modern world

On this sad day, let's remember some of the foreign artists who came to England and made great art here. Peter Lely from Holland. Henry Fuseli from Switzerland. Frank Auerbach from Germany. Phillip de Loutherbourg from France. They were obviously trying to tell us something.

Thank you Holbein from Switzerland, Van Dyck from Flanders, Francis Bacon from Ireland and Lucian Freud from Berlin for what you brought to British art. Where would British art be without you?

Beep beep. It's the birthday of Gillis van Coninxloo (1544-1607), the peripatetic Flemish landscape painter. A big influence on Bruegel, Coninxloo painted forests that were mysterious and dreamy. Were he around today, I reckon he'd be working for Disney or on Lord of the Rings

Beep beep. It's the birthday of Jan Van Goyen (1596-1656), who specialised in making places look wet and glum. Apparently, he was always in debt, so he churned out more pictures than any other Dutch master of the Golden Age. Mr Moody Waters, they called him. (No they didn't😀).

Beep beep. It's the birthday of Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955). Son of Suzanne Valadon. Alcoholic. Druggy. Friend of Modigliani and Soutine. He was, of course, a hack most of the time. Churning out tourist views of Montmartre. Often, working from postcards. But he had his moments.
