Beep beep. It's Gericault's birthday. So that means we remember the Raft of the Medusa, of course. Probably the most exciting picture in the Louvre, as well as one of the biggest. Mind you the sketches for it are even scarier. So I've thrown in one of his horses as a balm.

Every single art lover in the world will be supporting the marchers today in their global protest against environmental despoliation. Where would art be without a bountiful nature....?

Art lovers, I know, I know, I promised to call it a day with the Jacob Ree-Smogg Gallery, but they keep coming in and, er, my hand must have slipped on the clicker!

19th century France had the Impressionists. 20th century Germany has the Expressionists. 21st century Britain has the Rees-Moggists! You can’t stop art. You just can’t!

Beep beep. It's Dorothea Tanning's birthday. Hurrah. Her recent show at Tate Modern was SO interesting. The early surrealist work was creepy and loaded. And the late sculptures were a revelation. Her misfortune was to get involved with Max Ernst, who stole the limelight, as usual

Beep beep. It's the birthday of the strange and fascinating Christian Schad. He's celebrated as one of the stars of Neue Sachlichkeit - New Objectivity - a reaction to German expressionism that emerged the 1920s. Extreme detail. Scarred psychology. Smell of money. That's Schad.

It's Emil Nolde's birthday. Time to remember. Some will only remember his art - splashy, vague German Expressionism. Personally, I can't think of him without remembering his Nazi past. Bravo to Angela Merkel for taking two Noldes off her wall in protest. https://t.co/fX2dX2GKbS

Beep beep. It's Duchamp's birthday. A problematic day. The early Cubo-Futurist paintings are a real achievement. Unexpectedly spooky. But then he started hiding his misogyny behind sleazy conceptual mind-games. And too many believed him. Mind you, he was good in the Might Boosh!

I have a soft spot for the Italian Mannerist/Generist Vincenzo Campi (1530-1591). No one like him in art. This one’s called The Ricotta Eaters. Ricotta was considered a vulgar peasant cheese, so Campi is taking the pipi out if those who gorge on it. See the skull in the cheese!
