You see the same kind of look in later designs, both in other Gundam series, such as the Grey Phantom from 0080 (imo the best looking Gundam spaceship), and in ships from other franchises like the Nadesico and the AAA Wunder.

Personally I am a fan of the twin-boom kind of look, perhaps because it reminds me of anime spaceship design. The catamaran/twin-boom look is common in mecha anime, thanks to Gundam's influence. White Base from the og Gundam really set the trend.

Chiang mentions that Gareth Edwards wanted the craft to give a similar feeling to that of Superman flying with his arms stretched forwards, which is a neat idea that did make its way into the final design (right).
