Super Mario Galaxy has these whirlpool-looking objects that look like they're spinning in a complex way, but it's just a twisted, extruded hexagon with a bit of wiggle, and some texture scrolling to sell the illusion.
also, I just noticed that Counter-Strike: Source comes with a test_hardware map that tests a bunch of Source Engine features. besides the lack of func_monitor, I think noclip does pretty well.

i never noticed before that the sunshine model for mario has him wearing a short sleeve shirt that clearly doesn't fit him anymore. mario.. buddy. please go to penny's or a kohl's or something these shirts are far past their prime
Since NPCs in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door were created by a different team than the levels, some NPCs have walking and running animations in the game files that ultimately go unused, as the level doesn't have them move around. Here's Grifty, the storytelling rat.
@MelloMakes my favorite example of a "you can't do this anymore with modern tech" is something Okami did with its reflections, where, instead of using a real reflection here, it uses a stylized hyper-straight flipped model for this gate, highlighting how surreal and other-worldly it is.
