28 December 1678, Nicolas Foucquet is given a new valet, a fellow prisoner. The minister, Louvois, wished to satisfy himself of Foucquet's discretion and to ensure that no-one would ever know how the valet had been employed before he entered Pignerol.
☄️17 December 1664: Mme de Sévigné writes that a comet had been seen for four nights. At first, only women had seen it and were laughed at, but then the men saw it and it became a matter of great interest. One of those who sat up into the early hours to view it was d'Artagnan.
No doubt Louvois was more concerned that a weapon might have been hidden among the tea leaves, but there was always the fear that the tea itself might have been laced with poison.
Very unusual image of Henriette d'Angleterre, duchesse d'Orléans, taken from the book, 'Court Beauties of Old Whitehall' by W. R. H. Trowbridge.
