Now Aftershocks in Spider-Man 57 & Spectacular Spider-Man 223.
Grateful for Romita Jr on guest art duties for Spider-Man 57. His work looks a bit different with Rubenstein inking, but still very recognisable.
Although Ben's hair is wildly different to how it has been
The rest of the issue though is pretty much entirely about Aunt May's Return to both home and consciousness, with some wonderful Parker family interactions that you just don't get nowadays.
Imagine thinking this makes Peter unrelatable
But it all truly falls to shit in Spider-Man 56 - which oddly enough DeMatteis had no involvement in.
Firstly we get the return of the real Gwen. Who for some reason knows Spider-Man is Peter. But is also revealed to be a Clone by the end of the issue...
The Double then catches up to ASM 149 and the two Spidey's fight etc. Quality depiction of The Jackal here by sharp.
Of course the biggest question is...if Ben Reilly escapes the explosion, who the hell's body does Peter hide in ASM 150, and bury in ASM 151???
One of the problems with The Double is with it's depiction of The Jackal.
When we first see him in costume in the story he refers to himself as Professor Warren, yet when Gwen-Clone unmasks him at the end of the arc, Warren is shocked to realise he's the Jackal.
With Peter cured, Otto is immediately back to his old villainous ways and ready to resume their rivalry...or is he?
Ock still shows some honour, having made an 'anonymous' tip off to the police and turning himself in so that Spidey can make a full recovery.
Brilliant dynamic.
Bagley draws an excellent, brief, fight between Spidey and Ock resulting in the two working together to permanently cure him.
Continuity note: Web Of Death and Web Of Life both take place around the same time, so I really appreciate the fact it's snowing in both.
ASM 398, DeMatteis and Bagley open with Peter's reaction to finding out he's going to be a father - pure unadulterated joy, literally jumping off the walls.
It's a wonderful moment, and a stark contrast to the months of dreary Peter we've been reading.
