Nicholas Bayrachny's character illustrations for the 1996 Russian translation (incidentally published in the Belarus capital of Minsk) combine wiry musculature with comic-book expressions. Here's a fierce, bristling Gollum paddling his tiny boat towards Bilbo

It's been a while since our last sojourn into Wilderland courtesy of Laima Eglïte's shimmering illustrations for the 1991 Latvian So, if (like me) you've been pining for her flame-haired Bilbo then here's two classics for you via hungry Trolls and welcome Eagles

So, hold up your hand if (like me) you sometimes get nostalgic for the days when the One Ring was just a cool magical artefact used by Bilbo to taunt spiders or dodge dragons, goblins and Sackville-Bagginses.
Come on, folks, you can admit it...

(2/2) Here's a little Tolkienian link I spoke about recently in a paper: Eärendil's device by (c. 1960), Pennsylvania Dutch Hex sign common to Berks County (re-painted c.1970s), compass rose by Karen Wynn Fonstad (1981) from The Atlas of Middle-earth

So, in my dreams TV series opens with the partying Boffins of the Yale. First up, the not-so-perilous tale of two exiled brothers - Basso "gone to sea" and Briffo "removed to Bree". No Sauron, no Orcs just tobacco and scrumping (Image: S. Iukhimov 1988)

Tonight - a long overdue visit to Olga Ionajtis' glowing, colour-saturated illustrations for the 2005 Russian published by Astrel'. Here is one of my favourite depictions of Bilbo's final farewell to Thorin. Even the blood-stained axe is exquisite and beautiful

Part 11 of our visual foray into key scenes brings us to the banks of the Silverlode as Galadriel distributes gifts to the Fellowship. Tim Kirk's Elven Queen hands Frodo the Phial (c.1974) whilst Denis Gordeev's Gimli begs for a lock of her golden hair (c. 2015)

Part 5 of our visual odyssey through pivotal scenes from brings us to a rarely depicted but oft imagined clash of powers - Gandalf versus the Nazgûl at Weathertop. First up we have Sarah Beach's subtle 1986 monochrome followed by Theodore Matthews' vivid 2016 riot

Part 3 of our visual trek through viewing key scenes from different illustrators brings us to four young Hobbits (plus ponies) on the threshold of the Old Forest. Sending them into the shadows are the enigmatic Mary Fairburn (1968) and Hungary's Győző Vida (1981)

The ICE collectible card game Middle-earth: The Wizards (1995) contained some superb character studies from my old favourite Angus McBride. Not all were wizards (in fact, hardly any were) but it didn't really matter when we had beauties like this oddly prophetic Denethor
