Tonight! Dramatic plot development as head-lopping uruk Uglúk gets his hands on the Ring whilst late-to-the-party Legolas looks on. No sorry, this Anton Lomaev's stunning cover illustration for Mitchell Graham's knock-off The Fifth Ring. Give Lomaev the real thing

Tonight - a rare sight indeed, a female dwarf AND two dwarf kids. From the the brush of Laima Eglïte, this 1991 Latvian illustration depicts one of Thorin's company bidding a poignant (but slightly grumpy) farewell to his family

Tonight - from Cubicle 7's The One Ring RPG, we have Jon Hodgson's wandering Hobbit Scholar (2010) scrutinising a slab of broken masonry in thoughtful style. Ok, so the runes are a little weird, but the aesthetic evokes the great Angus McBride, which is never a bad thing

Tonight - glorious Elves prepare you for the weekend as only they can, courtesy of German elder Horus Engels (1957), Old Master stylist Klaus Ensikat (1974), Romanian-Hungarian comic wizard Livia Rusz (1975), and the shimmering brush of Laima Eglïte (1991) from Latvia

When it comes to Morgoth most depictions leave me cold (not in a good way). Then I revisit these - Lidia Postma (c.1979), Jaroslav Bradac (c.1979) and Sergei Iukhimov (1992) and all is okay again in evildom. If I had to choose one it would be Postma's chilling godhead

Great seminar with my history of illustration students this morning - a journey through 20th c. fantasy and SF imagery rounded off by a comprehensive analysis of Conversation with Smaug (1937) featuring Mikhail Belomlinsky's snappy 1976 Russian version as a comparison

Part 11 of our visual foray into key scenes brings us to the banks of the Silverlode as Galadriel distributes gifts to the Fellowship. Tim Kirk's Elven Queen hands Frodo the Phial (c.1974) whilst Denis Gordeev's Gimli begs for a lock of her golden hair (c. 2015)

Part 5 of our visual odyssey through pivotal scenes from brings us to a rarely depicted but oft imagined clash of powers - Gandalf versus the Nazgûl at Weathertop. First up we have Sarah Beach's subtle 1986 monochrome followed by Theodore Matthews' vivid 2016 riot

Part 3 of our visual trek through viewing key scenes from different illustrators brings us to four young Hobbits (plus ponies) on the threshold of the Old Forest. Sending them into the shadows are the enigmatic Mary Fairburn (1968) and Hungary's Győző Vida (1981)
