Art by Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921). I saw this one last month at @smithsoniannpg. Always loved it but never knew this: Underneath the surface is a portrait of the artist’s three children. After his wife died, he painted this over them to express his loss.

New deluxe art book by the great @YLossel. Page after page of stunning, inspired work. One of 2021's best art books for sure. You did it, Yoann! 🔥🔥🔥 (Blurred a bit of that beautiful artwork b/c of social media prude bots out there. Still one of my favorite Lossels.)

ALYSSA WINANS: I see so much realism on covers these days, so @AlyssaWinans' work pops forward in contrast. Her compositions aren't in line with a lot of the current new releases, which is a big asset. Even when she does art for a high-profile new release, it feels personal. 6/7

GALEN DARA: Like Rovina, she's been doing dynamite work for several years. What I love about @galendara's work is she's restless. She's *always* evolving. Never stops. Wish more artists were like that. Only four women have won the Best Pro Artist Hugo in its 68-year history. 4/7

ROVINA CAI: I love @RovinaCaiArt's work. She had a strong 2020 and she's been doing some of my favorite illustrations of the last few years. Never met her. Maybe someday I will. This piece for @JonathanStrahan's BOOK OF DRAGONS really pops on a bookstore shelf. 3/7
