The one saving grace is that other, much more talented writers, showed his death affecting the other characters in very good stories and brought weight and meaning to it.

So there you have it. Flash dies just so the writer can have his big shocking death in the 800th issue and leave his mark (stain) on the book, despite it having no purpose in the story, and absolutely wasting a brand new status quo for him that only lasted about 5 months
