@FaXistic From a historical perspective, this is actually fascinating because that's the exact issue revealed in a lot of the wars of the mid-late 19th century.
One famous example is probably Von Bredows Death Ride which that saw over 50% casualties to french rifle fire

Honestly, that's on the AI since when they have them, you can pretty easily neutralize their effectiveness with terrain and cavalry.

In my opinion, whichever one gives the option of all around protection.
I think the Testudo is closest to that by default, but I'd take the Phanlanx if it was allowed to form a square
