Not to mention, non-Indigenous people have turned Indigenous ppl into mascots. They draw physical traits of us exaggerated to the point of derogatory imagery, intended to dehumanize us while also bringing in the profits for those who create/sell them. 12
First off, let's look at some depictions of Indigenous people in modern media (comics/cartoons/film). I picked these ones because I can go more into depth on why they aren't good rep, but not as the ONLY examples. 2/
If you're looking for dark-skinned natives in media, read my comic Sixth World! Its about Dinora Redhorse, a young Dine woman that lives on Mars with her grandmother. Its a comic about Indigenous futurisms, power suits, and giant bugs! Issues sold @ https://t.co/kzyVMWJIUZ
Hayao Miyazaki also directly references the Emishi people in the film, Princess Mononoke. They are even lesser known than the Ainu and were known for their horsemanship, archery, and cultivation of millet and rice. One of the main characters, Ashitaka, is a banished "prince".
@GuardianArisha Last thing: I read some of the wiki and the character names/back story for the Patch Tribe has: a spirit named Big Chief (yikes), whose design is once again mishmashing different tribes and the tribe must convert to the religion of Shaman King (stinks of colonialism, yikes).
Pokemon team based on my bday! This was pretty fun! I'm biased towards bug and ghost types so I like this matchup. https://t.co/RABqbYYzVB
No one ever asks me about what Dinora's Coyote Exo Suit is based on, so here we go: its based on 3 things that have had a big influence on me, with my own personal Dine twist on it! Samus' armor from Metroid, Kamen Rider, and Nausicaa's suit/color scheme from Studio Ghibli.
https://t.co/qGMARShiWC thank you @PidjSorensen for this! Fun to make!
