What was the first book you remember really LOVING as a kid?

Mine was Thorn Rose by Errol le Cain. It was a 4th birthday present and I adored the illustrations.

What scene from a childhood book did you find genuinely terrifying?

For me: the moment when two rats try to cook a kitten.
