...these are some character shapes i found
scaling bones along Y/not-Y is my secret weapon here - with Global transforms that's S Y Y or S Shift+Y Shift+Y, with Local transforms just S Y or S Shift+Y :)
for this trick it helps to go a little bit overboard with bones in the rig so you have a good amount of control over the mesh...
Oh yeah and I got the dwaggy's fluff lighting up too during the gestures, hee :)
@DonkeyShinx rig-wise these are the only bones you super need.
for the finger bones.. in Pose Mode, rotate your finger bones in Local X axis on Individual Origins, then in Edit Mode use Ctrl-R to roll the bone, then check Pose Mode again to make sure the knuckles are bending the right way
today's lad update - lad is now fancier
not wedded to this, just felt a need to stay up half the night drawing bump maps after first day back in the office did not go so well
after foot replacement, some fun dwaggy calisthenics.. he can ALMOST touch the tip of his head with his tail!
