And this is the early sketch of the same part of the background. One of the ideas was to make the clouds in those deep, dark colours, but that made the background feel very tight and... almost claustrophobic.
Also heavy dithering doesn't work for me at all.
This painting does look MUCH brighter on reproductions than in reality. I've seen it only once in my life, and the only thing I noticed that day was this striking contrast between an old man and the enveloping darkness. It's hard for me to explain what I felt...
