Animation cels from Leiji Matsumoto's "Queen Emeraldas" anime. This 4 episode OVA may be the highest quality Leijiverse thing produced in the 20th century.
Sadly, it is not very accessible. Only the first 2 episodes were dubbed and released in English-speaking regions.
@leijisha
Steven Universe has a ton of references to old-school anime/manga. Here are some prime examples of nods to the Leijiverse!
@girlsnmoons @givinitmyoll In fact, he's married to Miyako Maki, who is to shojo as Matsumoto or Ishinomori is to shonen. She created Licca-chan, the Japanese equivalent of Barbie.
Dr. Sado pig wrestling in the original Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers. In the Japanese dub, this pig is fighting off a dire end, but Dr. Sane (as he's called in the English dub) claims to be attempting to give the beast veterinary treatment.

@retroanimechris I don't believe that Matsumoto ever approached this job thinking he was going to do the final character designs for all of the animations. There was simply no time with all his responsibilities fixing up Nishizaki's mess. That said, he DID do one from start to finish: Dr. Sado.
Rest in peace, Eiichi Yamamoto, who worked closely on the original Space Battleship Yamato, directing, writing scripts, and designing the iconic Japanese logo!
His strongest individualist mark on the world of anime is likely Belladonna of Sadness. He also directed Astro Boy!
Uncle Yamamori gets a little self-conscious during Earth's final battle against the La Metallians in Leiji Matsumoto's "Queen Millennia" movie.
