i added something i'd been wanting for a while, which is highlighting on the rule overlays. this indicates how each rule differs from the currently selected one.
this two phase family feels like a system of caves, woven through a set of faceted, geometrical spaces.
this is both highly functional as something like an FPS map, and compelling as a 2d image
what in god's name is that. the spine of it is a 1:1, but the ones crossing it are not 1:2 lines, also the intersections are symmetrical(?)
found a finer featured relative. this is pretty harmonious, texturally, with the other automata
there is a family of coarser featured, very honestly gridded cave automata. these preserve connection 100% of the time (i.e. no cave-ins) but also sometimes improvise narrow shortcut passages.
trying to find some rules (the messy caves, in this example) which are good at preserving topology- so you could seed them with a functionally important overall layout, and they'd shape and ornament it without eg closing off passages or creating shortcuts.
