experimenting with marching squares some more. my feeling so far is that they are very promising. tile count is super low, and the mental load is much lower than with other gradient types like wang tiles.

i got the modular gradients down to 5 tiles, plus a few weird special cases. you could definitely go smoother if you added more special cases, also if you went organic and abandoned the snapped gradients, but i think this is a nice economical look.
a second pass on some modular stony earth tiles. i wanted to emphasize the grain more, make them work well with hand painted (which these predated) and make them more consistent.

here is a raised band with small discs. i like the way the texture on this one came out.
this approach is also sort of neat, but it'd take more work to get the rhythms to work
trying out some different transitional sections after the crenelations / interlocking mechanism. this is my current favorite
