Now with regards to inspiration for Heartbreak Hotel I actually use Rene Gruau as inspiration for two characters: Miss Jeanne (whom we’ve met in the comic) and Benjamin Moore (haven’t met yet).
Miss Jeanne embodies the ideals of the 50s in contrast to Chuck. I use Gruau and
His work was inspired by Traditional Japanese art as well as French artwork at the time. He had the most amazing grasp on form and knew how to showcase the fashion he was drawing to really make it stand out. Like are you looking at these??? INCREDIBLE.
Rene Gruau was a French-Italian artist prominent in the 40s and 50s who quite frankly changed fashion illustration forever. He was an incredible person who even housed Jewish refugees during WWII.
Like seriously guys this dude was amazing.
Okay. While I wait for my laundry, how about a little history and inspiration?
I do replicas of my favorite vintage illustrations to help get a feel for the period, and this is a personal favorite based on the hands down best fashion illustrator
Rene Gruau

Studies are my favorite part of doing art. It’s not as time consuming as it sounds. If anything it’s really fun. I found a model for her, gathered references, and learned how to draw her in a way that’s flattering and better showcases the character.
Just a little drawing tip: ALWAYS DO STUDIES. Here is the first and most recent drawing done of Miss Saiphlyn for Heartbreak Hotel. What’s the difference here? The difference is I did studies to help get comfortable with drawing her. And they’re only a few months apart.
