Magic's 23rd expansion, APOCALYPSE, launched 19 years ago today—completing the Invasion block
While the other 2 sets in that block—Invasion & Planeshift—utilized ally multicolor, APC embraced enemy multicolor combinations...
(oh hello enemy painlands!)
21 yrs ago, the Beginner-Level PORTAL THREE KINGDOMS set was exclusively released in the Asia-Pacific region
Notably it was not set on a "Plane" but in the world of a historical Chinese novel
It is the only set to feature the keyword "Horsemanship" (this sets version of Flying)
Back on May 4th 2007, we glimpsed MTG's future when Future Sight was released
It was fairly prophetic because the now evergreen keywords Deathtouch, Lifelink & Reach showed up for the 1st time
We even met this guy in FUT (& his text foretold the upcoming Planewalker card-type)
The final set in the Alara block, ALARA REBORN, hit store shelves 11 years ago today
This set was the first (& so far only) to be pure gold—every card in ARB being multicolor
It introduced a slew of powerful cards, multicolor equipment & of course, the CASCADE mechanic
The legend has become a running joke with Magic R&D
Throughout MTG history there have been numerous nods to it:
1. Talruum Champion's playtest name was THROAT WOLF 2. Heart Wolf (Homelands) was inspired by the legend
3. A "playtest" TW appeared in convention Mystery Booster

STRONGHOLD was released in March 1998 & on it's cards came more story details of the Weatherlight Saga
These are the storyboards for Stronghold from Duelist #24 (Apr 98)
[Storyboards were collections of card art arranged to present the story clearly & consecutively for players]
Year: 2005 (20 May)
Location: USA
Winner: Terry Soh
Card: Rakdos Augermage
Set: Dissension (May 2006)
ARABIAN NIGHTS, released Dec 1993, is unique among #mtg US expansions-
It's the only one set in a true-world location (Middle East) & based on a work of literature specifically (1001 Nights)
Richard Garfield was inspired to do this by @neilhimself's comic Sandman #50 (Jun 1993)
