It's a romantic comedy yuri which lovingly takes potshots at 'traditional' Yuri. The protagonists work at a cafe themed after a private all-girl European-style school, a la old Yuri stories!

FSS gets a film that's not v loyal to the manga but is still gorgeous. Patlabor's best iteration: a TV action-sitcom format. And ofc Gundam 0080: part fandom deconstruction, part grim war story, beautifully animated. Made me cry.

1992: Porco Rosso & Sailor Moon (tie)

My favourite Ghibli film and Sailor Moon's 1st season. Porco Rosso is a love letter to Italy and airplanes, beautiful and tragic. Sailor Moon's iconic first season is full of great humour, relatable characters and an impeccable aesthetic.

1994: WHY WAS NINETIES ANIME SO GOD-TIER!?!?

The best season of Sailor Moon, S. The 1st season of Magic Knight Rayearth, the first anime I watched after learning the word 'anime'. The exciting shonen romp of G Gundam. The dumb musical journey of Macross 7. God.

1995: THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE

Look at this goddamn year. Evangelion. The definitive edition of Macross Plus. The incredible, unique, sadder and gayer second season of Rayearth. Fuck.
