1999: Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse

The most aesthetically fascinating anime film I have ever seen. The pinnacle of Ikuhara's artistic inspirations in avant-garde film, theatre and 70s Shoujo. A surreal journey of self-discovery and Yuri classic. Made me cry.

1999 part 2: Turn A Gundam

Yoshiyuki Tomino's masterpiece. A Gundam show about *preventing* a war rather than fighting one. Yoko Kanno's most eclectic soundtrack. Syd Mead's alien mecha designs. Capcom's Akira Yasuda's chara designs. Made me cry and smile. TURN A TURN

2000: FLCL (Runner-up: CCSakura Movie 2)

Again, not much I can say about FLCL (thanks to overhyping in the anglo sphere). The epitome of weird Gainax. Fantastic style. Never needed sequels. A+ no notes (but then again I've not watched it in a LONG time)

2008: Macross Frontier / Gundam 00 Second Season (tie)

Two very different shows from the top mecha anime franchises... I couldn't choose! Both are incredible, what can I tell ya.
