I was sold on the film before seeing it simply through a comparison to Takahata's version of The Tale of Princess Kaguya and that's incredibly apt. It's an incredibly similar film in a lot of respects.
Also, the use of water colours is astounding.
It is absolutely incredible to look and it's amazing to think that the director did all of this himself.
There are two occasions in which Jumbo is nearly killed in this and had he been killed in either of them, I would have likely hated this and written it off as incredibly cynical and mean. That he doesn't die and the islanders get a happy ending makes it rather life-affirming.
Everything is extremely chaotic here and I think that's incredibly appropriate.
The birds being used to signify that something ominous is coming is really effective, especially with the colour changes.
At this point I'm used to anything that Sugii's been involved in looking fantastic but I think this is definitely noteworthy for it.
Also on the agenda today was The Rose and Joe, a wonderfully bittersweet short about a dog in love with a rose and his attempts to protect it. I adored it.
