I have far too many screencaps of it, but when a film looks this good what's considered too many screencaps?
Honestly, though, I don't even really need to say anything about the film, the way it looks speaks for it.
I was sold on the film before seeing it simply through a comparison to Takahata's version of The Tale of Princess Kaguya and that's incredibly apt. It's an incredibly similar film in a lot of respects.
Also, the use of water colours is astounding.
It is absolutely incredible to look and it's amazing to think that the director did all of this himself.
There are two occasions in which Jumbo is nearly killed in this and had he been killed in either of them, I would have likely hated this and written it off as incredibly cynical and mean. That he doesn't die and the islanders get a happy ending makes it rather life-affirming.
Everything is extremely chaotic here and I think that's incredibly appropriate.
The birds being used to signify that something ominous is coming is really effective, especially with the colour changes.
