Frankenstein was real. Scientist Luigi Galvani (1737-1798) noticed that if he touched a dead frog’s muscle with an electrical charge the frog’s legs kicked. Thus Galvanism: (Electrifying the Dead) was born. Galvani then attempted to re-animate the corpses of executed criminals.

URIZEN. In William Blake's highly unconventional spiritual mythology, Urizen is the name of a creator-figure like the Demiurge of the Gnostic sects, but also
similar to Milton's Satan. He is depicted as a bearded old man & often bears tools, to create & constrain the universe.

This classic retro-futurist Utopian image was actually a 60ft wide mural in the Disney Epcot Centre. It was painted in 1983 by sci-fi illustrator Robert McCall (1919-2010). Called, "The Prologue and The Promise", it took 9 months to paint. It no longer exists today.

With 10 days in each week & 30 days in every month, the French Revolutionary calendar was created during the French Revolution & used by the govt from 1793 to 1805. It renamed all days & months to remove all taint of religion, royalty or tradition.

The Cult of the Supreme Being was intended to become the state religion of the new French Republic. Established by Robespierre during the French Revolution, it lasted less than a year. There was a vast one-off "festival of the Supreme Being" mobilising millions of people in 1794.

“Sanguinocrat”. The fall of Robespierre came in July 1794 with a conspiracy among his fellow French revolutionaries. To justify their actions, they painted Robespierre as an egomaniac, a fanatic and a “sanguinocrat” (ruler by violence). 17,000 died in the 11 months of the terror.

"Death and the Woodcutter" was a recurring theme in the art of Alphonse Legros (1837-1911). Although it seems mythical now, at the time the art drew attention to the plight of the 'proletarians of the forest' in France - with rural depopulation and the destruction of forests.

Seascapes by Caspar David Friedrich (1774 – 1840). Friedrich's work brought him renown early in his career. Nevertheless, his work fell from favour during his later years, and he died in obscurity. It wasn't until the 20th Century that he was rediscovered.
