#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Emily Sutton for Michael Bond's "The Tale of the Castle Mice" (2016). An unashamedly old fashioned tale of mice living in a dolls house, but so charmingly illustrated I couldn't resist! Sutton's nod to Bawden/Ravilious lends a lovely retro feel.
#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Charles Folkard for Lucy Garnett's
"Ottoman Wonder Tales" (1915). Fascinating tales to read as I fly off to Ankara and @BESATURKEY for a week. Don't forget @JackieMorrisArt duputises from tomorrow. I'll be back on Monday 18th. Behave yourselves!
#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by John Burningham for "Humbert, Mr Firkin and the Lord Mayor of London" (1965). These studies of the titular scrap-iron horse are full of life and movement, and tenderness... Expertly grouped on the page. Utterly glorious.
#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Henry Cole for Richardson & Parnell's "And Tango makes Three" (2005), the infamous, banned and beloved true story of male penguin parenting. A perfect way to end #LGBTHM19. Beautifully drawn with tender, loving characters.
#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Cicely Mary Barker for "Flower Fairies of Winter" (1919). Here's the Snowdop Fairy - 100 years old and still so much loved. I've see a great many snowdrops here in Suffolk, just beautiful - but so mild we have daffodils alongside them...
Some fabulous Firebirds and other beasts flew out of Mrs Noah's Pockets today, at the masterclass @illustrationHQ! I'm. In awe of the work produced.
#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Brian Wildsmith for his book "Birds" (1967), a rhapsodic collection of breathtaking, inspirational paintings, with collective nouns for different species. This is a detail from "A wedge of swans". Utterly glorious.
#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by @emmachichesterc for Geraldine McCaughrean's "Roman Myths" (1999). Emma always maintains a freshness & clarity in her illustration, with exquisite lighting and shadow - much harder to achieve than you might think! Here's Diana & a dreamy Endymion.
#BookIllustrationOfTheDay is by Jiří Trnka for "The Nix of the Mill Pond" (from Grimm's Fairy Tales 1961). Legendary Czech animator also illustrated several fairy tale volumes. A visionary, inspirational artist, his extraordinary work full of atmosphere, beauty & elegant charm.
