Actually, it's interesting to know that when this was out, .hack//SIGN wasn't over, and you still spend most of the game having no fucking idea of what exactly the Phases of Morganna are, synchronizing the end of .hack//SIGN with the revelations right before the battle with Magus
Being victorious against a Phase and then proceeding to get your ass beat in the most brutal way possible in a random field right after is the absolute .hack// mood
And he's facing a situation that absolutely nobody even know the extent of, even less having some sort of control in it. (His dialogues with BlackRose are actually pretty clever, where the Hero disappears and only a utterly lost and scared kid remains)
It's funny how the tetralogy and more exactly MUTATION directly toys with the concept of Chosen hero and everything surrounding him.
