Saw this today @SoaneMuseum and thought immediately of the heroic guy with the narwhal tusk during the recent London Bridge terrorist attack. Not an association that Hogarth could ever have guessed at.
C18th gender panic: “Can any thing be more disgustful to a man, than to see the woman he admires in a habit so like his own, that at a distance he does not know, whether it be the captain of the guard, or the treasurer of his heart who is approaching him?”
Since WOFFINGTON appear'd to grace the Scene,
What Stoic Bosom has not raptur'd been?
Born to surprize, even in the meanest Part,
She shines through all, and storms ev'ry Heart.
I’ve got the print on the left - supposedly the Woffington in As You Like It - but the illustration on the right from @FairSongster confirms what I have long suspected: it’s actually Kitty Clive in Love in a Riddle / Damon and Phillida.
