Bedford Forrest whips the Federals occupying the town of Athens, then shells nearby Fort Henderson into submission, captures a train carrying Federal reinforcements, and torches the Sulphur Creek Trestle.

..along with 9k troopers and 3k infantry attacked an unsuspecting Stuart at dawn. Attacks and counterattacks ensued throughout the day... ending with 900 Union casualties, & 600 Confederate. The rebs had also captured an artillery battery, and held the field at days end...
Today in 1864 began the Battle of Cold Harbor. Outnumbered almost two to one, Lee's entrenched veterans caused massive losses in Grant’s army.. estimated @ 12 - 15k. Lee's losses were comparatively light, at approximately 1,500, with modern historian estimates of 4.5k.
