@GailSimone i read a whole analysis about New Gods and how it drew so heavily on his life. With Apocalypse being New York, California being New Genesis. High Father teaching his philosophy Kirby had after the war. etc. I read he wanted it to be his Lord of the Rings, and it is. very epic.
