Charlotte Bronte died, while pregnant, aged 38 #otd 1855. A terrible loss to her husband, father and friends but her works of genius will never die. She was a brilliant writer & a kind, brilliant human being:

I like this portrait that Anne Bronte drew whilst governess at Thorp Green Hall. She gifted it to her friend there, Ann Marshall the maid, and it's probably of Anne's youngest pupil Mary Robinson.

A great day for birthdays! Jane Austen is 245 today & Ludwig van Beethoven is 250 today! Emily Bronte, a brilliant pianist, was a huge fan of Beethoven's work; Charlotte Bronte wasn't keen on Austen's writing at first but came to admire it.

One of the books I most enjoyed re-reading this year was Villette, how sad that it was Charlotte Bronte's final completed novel. What other masterpieces would she have created?

#otd 1810 a daughter Elizabeth was born in Chelsea to William and Elizabeth Stevenson (nee Holland). Her mother died when she was one & she was brought up by an aunt. She became famous as Elizabeth Gaskell, biographer & great friend of Charlotte Bronte, & a brilliant novelist.

A sad anniversary today as #otd 1821 Maria Bronte died aged 38. Her youngest daughter Anne was just one year old.
