One of the most classic scenes in animation history: jazz legend Cab Calloway as a moonwalking walrus in the 1932 Betty Boop cartoon MINNIE THE MOOCHER. Pre-code references to drugs and murder abound. Perfect Halloween viewing.

My favorite cartoon to watch around Halloween: 1930's genuinely terrifying SWING YOU SINNERS!, from the great Max Fleischer Studio. That scatting chicken lives forever in my brain.

Underrated: New Yorker cartoonist Barbara Shermund. Her flapper cartoons of the '20s and '30s are beautifully drawn and lots of fun.

Happy birthday to Walt Kelly, the genius behind the comic strip POGO, which ruthlessly satirized Joseph McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover, Richard Nixon and the KKK from 1949 to 1975. One of the greats.
