In the summer of 1549, a group of rebels from towns and villages across Norfolk camped beneath a large oak tree on Mousehold Heath, led by Robert Kett. They were protesting against enclosure, the fencing off of common land by powerful landlords. Day 105:

Robert Kett led Kett’s Rebellion, a revolt in response to the tragedy of the commons. The rebels seized control of Norwich for nearly all of Aug. 1549 before falling to a professional army. Found guilty of treason, he was hung from the castle later that year

This oil painting of Robert Jannys, Mayor of Norwich in 1517 and 1524, was painted by an unknown artist in the 17th Century.

Robert was originally a grocer by trade, and would later become one of the wealthiest people in Norwich!
