it is likely the events of dk arcade that lead to mario and luigi losing their jobs at the construction site (maybe spike lectures them about all the health and safety violations and how someone could’ve been hurt + his company could’ve been sued)

the mario bros grow up together presumably searching for jobs around brooklyn. we know they will find work at a construction site owned by foreman spike which is the setting of wrecking crew and dk arcade (featuring the younger cranky kong, pauline and possibly even dk jr)

so what i think happened is that mario and luigi’s parents at some point during the bros’ adolescence moved to the metro kingdom / brooklyn to live an ordinary life. this would explain why mario and luigi don’t remember the mushroom kingdom at all bc they were too young.

matt and anne are both thai-american, anne is personal to matt’s experience growing as a kid and learning about his own heritage on trips to bangkok. his mom even voices anne’s mom on the show, that is as personal as it gets.
