When I approach painting a head like this I find it helpful to think of it in terms of a sculpture, not a painting. Instead of flat paint on canvas, I imagine that I’m working with a lump of clay. Detail of 3/4 length portrait I did last year of the great artist Rob Wareing.

Walked my little boy to school today, his first day at big school.
I still think of him like this, in his baby grow, sat on a big chair, playing with his fingers and toes, waiting to be cuddled. Still one of my favourite paintings, never to be sold. Oil on canvas board, 75x60cm.

Had a great evening teaching portrait painting via Zoom last night for a fantastic group. Here’s what I managed in the 1.5hr of painting time.
