But if sci-fi is also a meditation on 'the status of man in the universe' then a lot of hard sci-fi and some science fantasy would fail the test. Aldiss is from the New Wave of 1960s sci-fi which was somewhat esoteric as well as experimental.
Aldiss references the Gothic in his definition of science fiction because he believes Mary Shelly's Frankenstein is pivotal to the birth of sci-fi. Whether the Gothic is equally pivotal is a moot point.
Relay 1 was launched a few months after Telstar, on 13 December 1962. As well as measuring the Earth's radiation belts it enabled a TV relay from America to Japan. In 1964 it also provided relay pictures from the Tokyo Olympics.
By the late 19th century scientific gothic horror was in vogue: mad creations of man, crazed séances and mesmeric powers lurked in forbidding houses. The supernatural gothic turned instead towards vampires and etheric creatures.
By the 1800s the gothic romance had begun to develop along two distinct paths.
