Attracting butterflies to our gardens has been a long standing aim for gardeners. As well as looking beautiful, they're important pollinators.

These two pieces of art from the Lindley Library show that even in the 19th century we wanted butterflies in our gardens!

Did you know each month is represented by a different flower?

August's flower is the Gladioli. Gladiolus symbolises strength of character, Moral Integrity and honour and stands for sincerity Gladiolus bloom in variety of colours like red, pink, white, yellow and orange.

Penstemons are one of the most valuable late summer-flowering perennials and, in all but the coldest regions, are easy and reliable.

Available in a variety of colours, they are great for pollinators!

Fuchsias remain one of the UK's most popular garden plants.

Their flowers are diverse, ranging from dainty and elegant to bold and bright, which makes them them great additions in bedding displays, containers or borders.

This colour engraved plate from the 1777 edition of 'Flora Londinensis', shows an Orchis mascula.

The books purpose was to include 'plates and descriptions of such plants as grow wild in the environs of London'.
