I don’t see why not rendering a background or setting in art is such a big deal? Plenty of Fine Artists did it. Leyendecker and Rockwell made a living at it

@JessiSheron I guess the otherworldliness of the environment to Chihiro is conveyed through how un-eastern it looks. Yubaba is strangest of all so her whole look goes beyond Chinese and into European, aping the Carricatured English Etchings which were directly inspired by Japanese Grotesques

This movie is special. It’s more than just stop motion, it also seamlessly fuses with 3D and Live Action and Cut Out. It’s the one project that embodies Selick’s range. It’s VERY dark and razor sharp with Dahl’s sense of humor but it also delivers an unexpected level of WARMTH.
