“Envious people be the greatest murderers of the world & greatest thieves”: Othello III.iii.
Punishment of the Envious (Drowning):
Richard Pynson’s 1506 The Kalender of Shepherdes.
A lovely thing: an enamel purse, possibly by Jacques II Laudin, early 17th century, with portraits of a lady and a gentleman in court dress in polychrome enamel. 8 cm high. Est. £1,500-£2,000, not surprised that it sold for £17,000 hammer!
Spranger married Christina Müller, the daughter of a rich jeweler from Prague in 1582. His wife died in 1600 after all their children had died. This sad story is depicted in Aegidius Sadeler's Portrait of Bartholomeus Spranger with an Allegory on the Death of his Wife, 1600.
