El Greco (1541-1614) - a transcendental artist, his angels have a hallucinatory genius

The Lippis (father, c1406-69 & son). These two were relatively minor Italian painters yet created characteristic angels who each have their own personality. They inspire obsession amongst some art historians & its easy to see why if you spend time with their work

As it’s Christmas Eve I wanted to explore beautiful images of angels in art. Angels appear in Irish mythology & in Celtic folklore to the extent that Irish people put angels on top of their Christmas trees rather than fairies.

He died in 1999, aged 95. Male Nude (1950, nd & nd). His work is beginning to be re-evaluated as part of the recognition of the human rights of LGBTQI people & their experience

In the 1940s the artist became involved with painter George Tooker. He was also introduced to the egg tempera medium. This was a Renaissance technique which allowed hyper-realism. Youth with Kite (1941), Reflection (1944), Bill Miller (1945) & Nude (nd)

His images of men are very much ahead of their time & display the male on male gaze at a time when it was women who were objectified. Conversation Piece (1939-40), Herrin Massacre (1940), Aviator (1941) & Arabesque (1941)

In 1938 he painted Pocahontas Saving the Life of John Smith. He used his partner Jared French as Smith & was obliged to repaint part of the picture to appease bigots. George Platt Lynes (1937), Seeing the New Year In (1939) & Ballet Positions (1939) & Pocahantas (1938)
