One of Schiele’s greatest series of masterpieces is his group of erotic & passionate self-portraits often in etiolated form around 1910
Schiele became aware of the work of Munch, Toorop & Van Gogh & was inspired by them (1909). From this time Schiele began exploring his sexuality- especially in drawings & watercolours. Self-portrait (1910), Sunflower (1908), Hans Massmann (1909) & Dead Girl (1910)
He had his first exhibit in 1909. Along with Klimt, Schiele was also influenced by Kokoschka. Having integrated their ideas he created his own style. The Artist’s Sister (1908), Gerti Schiele (1909), Male Nude Crouching (1909) & Self-portrait (1909)
Born in Tulln, Austria he attended the School of Arts & Crafts, Vienna (1906). He found the environment there too constraining & he left after 3y. Klosterneuberg (1905), Winding Brook (1906), Boating (1907)
By 1843 he returned to Copenhagen. He married in 1846 & had 13 children, 5 of whom died young. Elise Købke (1850), Christiane Købke (1854) & Ægir’s Feast (1857)
Hansen created sublime images of the Campagna & evoked the atmosphere of the ancient temples. Vesta Temple in Rome (1837), Columns of the Temple of Neptune, Paestum (1838), The Arch of Titus, Rome (1839) & Resting Model (1839)
His early portraits of his sisters show a brother’s regard & an authentic depiction of his love for them. The Artist’s Sisters Alvilde, Ida & Henriette (1827), A Girl with Basket (c1827) & Interior at St Bendt’s Church at Ringsted (1829)
England had been experiencing a religious revival in the 1840s. Rossetti was caught up in the fervour. St Catherine (1857), The Lady of Shallot (1857) & The Tune of Seven Towers (1857)
Rossetti also painted & drew Arthurian legends & these would also inspire Edward Burne-Jones. Dante’s Vision (1855), Paolo & Francesca (1855) & Jane Burden (1857). Some of his models were minor artists.
Portrait of a Young Man (c1495), Deposition (1495) & Baptism of Christ (1496-8). The portrait of the young man is an essay in empathy & loving description- it seems likely this may have been Perugino’s partner given its intimacy & dreamlike pose.
