Thread: Christian Rohlfs (1849-1938) was a German Expressionist who was denounced by the Nazis but has had a major influence on German art. He is one of the greatest 20th C Expressionists. Dancers (1920), Death as a Juggler (1929) & Red Amaryllis (1931). He was born on this day.
Woman Peeling Apples (1663), Reading a Letter (1664) & Village House (1665). His mature work demonstrates his uncanny ability to use light & shade as well as balance a composition.
de Hooch was born in Rotterdam, son 2 a bricklayer & midwife. He was believed to have studied under Nicolaes Berchem. From 1650 he was under the patronage of a merchant & travelled to The Hague, Leiden & Delft. Soldier (c1650) & Woman with Basket (1651) & Man Offering Wine (1653)
She regularly travelled to Paris & was influenced by artists there & influenced some of them. Gaugin, Van Gogh & Cézanne appealed to her. Girl with Stork (1906), Self-Portrait Nude (1906) & Portrait of Lee Hoetger (1906)
