In the early years he integrated his iconographic training with his awareness of contemporary art & was often criticised for being blasphemous. Bathing of the Red Horse (1912), Portrait of a Boy (1913) & the Artist’s Wife (1913)

The artist Benois liked his work but Repin disliked it. He produced his iconic Bathing of a Red Horse in 1912. The Dream (1910), Boys Playing (1911) & Bacchante (1912). The Red Horse (next Tweet) was to be prophetic of politics to come.

Vodkin married in 1906 in Paris. Maria Iovanovic would be the guardian of his legacy. Some of his early work was for the Church but it was too modern for them & later critics complained that some of his art was too erotic. Portrait (1908), The Shore (1908) & Cain & Abel (1910)

Roderic O’Conor (1860-1940) Romeo & Juliet. O’Conor was an important post-impressionist based in France of Gaelic aristocratic stock. It was only after his wife’s death that his work became known. He loved painting female nudes but I think this work sums up love!

From Spain we have Goya. His drawings include a number of lovers. However it’s his El Sueño (c1800) that throbs with sensuality. Described as pornography by the Irish media when acquired by the National Gallery of Ireland in 1969 it’s now considered one of their treasured works.

Käthe Kollwitz is an artist who touches one to the core. Her pictures of lovers are deeply moving & urgent. However it is her depiction of a mother’s love that is triumphant! If I could only have one artist, I’d choose her.

Christopher Wood (1901-30) Anemones in a Cornish Window (1930), Anemones in a Window, Broadchalke (1928) & Anemones in a Yellow Jug (c1930s). A tragically short-lived English artist, he captured the essence of the wind flower.

Odilon Redon (1840-1916) Bouquet of Anemones (nd), Still Life with Anemones (nd) & Anemone in the Mask (nd). Redon was a Symbolist painter, the very definition of decadence to the conservative critics. This is hinted at in his mask.

Emil Nolde (1867-1956) Anemones in a Blue Vase (c1935) & Amaryllis & Anemones (c1930) & Two Anemone Flowers (nd). That Nolde was a great Expressionist is clear - however it’s hard to enjoy his work when you know he was a card carrying Nazi member.

Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) Anemones (1937), Anemones (1953) & Anemones (1949). Dufy had a sketchy relaxed style of painting & this is readily apparent in his studies of the flower. They are the essence of 1950s French style.
