As Rohlfs examined & tried each style he integrated them into his own. Van Gogh had a big influence on his thinking, as seen in the final landscape here -Lying Figure with Red Trousers (1907), Male Nude (1905), Still Life with Pineapple (1903) & Garden in Soest (c1905)

Thread: Christian Rohlfs (1849-1938) was a German Expressionist who was denounced by the Far Right but has had a major influence on German art. He is one of the greatest 20th C Expressionists. Dancers (1920), Death as a Juggler (1929) & Red Amaryllis (1931)

In looking at his images there is a sense of the artist forcing images into life with superhuman effort. Self-Portrait with Chicken & Rooster (1924), Still Life with Cat & Onions (1928), Portrait of Patrick Edwards (1928) & Boy at Harvest Time (1923)

It was just as well that he left Russia when he did. One cannot imagine the USSR approving of his Russian Faces or his individuality. Faces of Russia (c1923), The Twins (1922-3), The Harlot of Marseille (1923) & German Butcher (1938)

He organised a leaderless group called the Society of Young Artists in 1919. Peasants in the Field (1920), Sunflowers (1917-9), Village (1918) & Feodor Chaliapin (1918). The final image subverts the centuries old female nude pose as favoured by Titian & Goya.

From 1916-18 he was painting the lives of the Russian peasants & sought to present their struggles as heroic. This would be in line with future revolutionary thought at the time. Portrait of an Artist (1917), Maria Yasnaya (1916), Self-Portrait (1916) & Childhood (1916)

Thread: Boris Grigoriev (1886-1939) died on this day. He was a Russian social realist painter who created unique & psychologically intense portraits. He is hardly known today but his art is fascinating

Lots of crazy rumours doing the rounds. Ignore them. Vote for who you want & in order of your preference. Go as far down the list as you can as your vote can matter even up to 12 or 14 etc. This is Irish artist, James Arthur O’Connor’s (1792-1841) Moonlight.

He had an idiosyncratic vision where he looked at the corner of things or the overlooked detail. I love his Palace Garden & his moonlight studies for that very reason.
