Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) painted this, The Funeral of Patroclus, in 1778. It is his first neoclassical work & he would go on to be the master of the neoclassical movement. It was painted in Rome. Now recognised as seminal in his oeuvre, it was once a table top!

François Boucher (c1751) depicts the courtesan Mademoiselle O’Murphy in this drawing. A girl of Irish extraction she holds the laurels for possibly being the most famous Irish woman in art. The drawing is a new acquisition- for comparison here’s the finished picture (in Cologne)

Poussin (1594-1665) painted Acis & Galatea. Although created in Rome in 1627-8, this stunning mythological piece has a classic French colour palette. The lovers are exquisitely portrayed. Poussin is out of favour now but deserves more interest.

Much activity took place on St Bridget’s Eve. A cake was made & the neighbours called. There are a number of traditions to do with wheat & red ribbons; Items associated with fertility of the land & of nature. Here’s St Bridget by Patrick Tuohy (1894-1930)

Beckmann’s work fell from prominence in the late 20th C but in the past two decades has had a resurgence & he is now recognised as one of the great artists of the 20th C. Elephants with Dancing Girl (c1944), Masquerade (1948), Woman with Mask (1948) & Perseus (1949)

Symbolism was central to his work. With the rise of the Far Right his art became prophetic of the horrors to emerge - particularly his magnificent Europa. Departure (1935), The King (1933-7), Rape of Europa (1933) & Self-Portrait (1934)

He captured the social side of the Weimar Republic doing much to create its image as an ‘anything goes’ period. His female figures have a monumental sensuality. Before the Masked Ball (1922), Reading (1923), Self-Portrait (1923) & Siesta (1924-31)
