In 1932 Willem moved to a rural area, near Apeldoorn. He also illustrated a number of poetry books. He met Jan Tijssen & they fell in love in 1933. The couple lived together from 1933-9. By 1935 he had turned his focus to writing. (Arondeus’ work & with fishermen, Urk)

Life was hard for him & he took odd jobs whilst practising his art. In the 1920s his abilities were finally recognised in his being commissioned to paint a mural for Rotterdam Town Hall (1923). Money was still hard to come by.

In 1926 he had his first one man exhibit in Berlin. Man with Top Hat (1926), Am Sandpfad in Emden (1926), Self-Portrait with Green Hat (1927) & Masquerade (1927). His was an intense & personal vision.

Rose Barton (1856-1929) was a gifted watercolourist who painted gardens, children & street scenes. Her images of Dublin record a time when it was the second city of the Empire & ‘society’ centred on Dublin Castle. St Patrick’s Cathedral & Changing the Guard, Dublin Castle.

George Henry (1858-1943) was a member of the Glasgow School. He even travelled to Japan. The Cabbage Girl (1887), Autumn (1889), An at Home in Japan (1894) & Felicity (1916)

He exhibited again in 1893 in Berlin. Munch moved to Paris in 1896 - however critics did not fully understand his work but collectors began to support him & he became more comfortable. Vampire (1895-1902), Girl on Beach (1896), Inheritance (1897-9) & Metabolism (1898-9)
