Mantegna sought to explore the emotion of events in the bible. His works of the Madonna & Child achieve great warmth & love. Madonna of the Cherubim (1485), Madonna of the Cave (1488-90) & Ecce Homo (c1500)

Presentation at the Temple (1460), Cardinal Trevisan (1459-60) & St George (1460). The Portrait came about when the Pope commissioned Mantegna to paint the Cardinal who was part of the Council of Mantua (1459). The Council sought to rally Europeans against the Ottomans

The San Zeno Polyptych (1457-60) is another work where Mantegna’s research is apparent. A particular feature are the garlands, inspired by Roman sarcophagi. It was the first major Renaissance work in Verona & he is believed to have designed the frame.

The Far Right forced Kollwitz to resign her professorship & she started on her Death Cycle including The Call of Death (self-portrait), Young Girl in the Lap of Death & Death Seizing a Woman (1934). It’s hard not to see these as symbolic of the collapse of German civilisation

Kollwitz created her three most famous posters - Germany’s Children Starving (1924), Bread (1924) & Never Again War (1924) at a time when Germany was collapsing after the Great War. It was a time of crisis & children were the great artist’s concern

Waterhouse falls into the category of a beloved artist who ranks with many as their favourite painter. However, unlike Schiele or Van Gogh, he did not approach his subject matter with authentic emotion. It would be interesting to know why that was

Waterhouse followed the dictum of art for art’s sake & his ability & mood setting make one yearn for him to have approached subject matter that was authentic (like Klimt or Schiele, for instance). A Tale from the Decameron (1916), Miranda (1916) & Tristan & Isolde (1916)

One of my favourite pictures by him is of the Mystic Wood where he captured a twilight forest exquisitely. The Mystic Wood (1914-17), Flower Study (1915-16) & I Am Half Sick of Shadows, Said the Lady of Shalott (1915)

Ophelia was a popular subject for the PRB & Waterhouse painted the doomed maiden at least three times - each stunning. Ophelia (1910), Sketch of Circe (c1911-14), The Charmer (1911) & A Song of Springtime (1913)

His mature images of women tend to be individual unlike his earlier female subjects. Even so they lack intensity & appear as actors playing parts. Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May (1908), Soul of the Rose (1908), The Listener (1909)
