After two years of lockdown this Summer has been special. The long days of sunshine, balmy weather & fun with friends & family have all inspired me to create a group of drawings about Summer & passion.
He was commissioned to paint St John’s Church in Tampere (with Magnus Enckell) from 1904-6. He created a running frieze of naked boys holding a garland which rings the Cathedral. They symbolise life & beginnings & the garland is the path of life
Simberg’s portraits have a uniquely Finnish feel to them. They are psychologically intense, direct & honest. Auntie (1898), Mikael Lybeck (1905), Churchgoer (nd) & Marie von Heiroth (1904). Images that are stark & elemental.
Born in Hamina, Simberg started art lessons in 1891 before attending the Finnish Art Association (1893-5). He then studied under Gallen-Kallela between 1895-7. Woman (1890), Vedhuggaren (1890), Landscape (1890s) & Devil by the Pot (1897)
